Things You Should Know About the Drupal 10 Readiness Initiative
The primary focus of the Drupal 10 Readiness initiative is on creating an agenda to ensure that Drupal 10 is getting released by 2022. It also aims to provide adequate time to update sites and maintain the security status.1
What are the main priorities of the Drupal 10 initiative?
- Support, encourage, and help contributed module maintainers move along while the modules are updated.1
- Recognize the tasks to be completed for the release of Drupal 10, focusing on updating dependencies and removing deprecated APIs.1
- To ensure Drupal 10 is released on December 14, 2022, as planned.
When was it launched?
This Strategic Initiative was launched at the DrupalCon Global 2021. It has begun putting the plans into action.
This further will help ensure the release of Drupal 10 on 14th December 2022 according to the plans of the Drupal community. The release of Drupal 10 was pushed back to December from the originally scheduled release date of June this year.2
What is the current status of the Drupal 10 readiness initiative?
As per the latest update on drupal.org, there is one more ticket to close on the deprecation clean-up-related tickets and Drupal 10 is getting closer to the release.
As per the plan, here are the key dates:
Beta release: The week of September 12, beta versions of both Drupal 9.5 and Drupal 10 will be released.
Drupal 10 release: December 14, 20223 .
The next move towards Drupal 10
For Drupal 9 users
The best right now is to help automate the process towards Drupal 10 If you are on Drupal 9.2
For Drupal 8 users
Drupal 8 users should not wait till Drupal 10 gets released. They should upgrade immediately to Drupal 9 as Drupal 8 already reached its end of life in November 2021. There is a huge security risk in continuing with Drupal 8.
For Drupal 7 users
Drupal 7 has an end-of-life date of November 2023.4 There is every likelihood that the contributed projects one uses are available for Drupal 9 already. These contributed projects might not be ready soon in Drupal 10 after it is released.
It is much easier to migrate from Drupal 9 to Drupal 10 than it is to migrate from Drupal 7. So, rather than waiting for Drupal 10 to be released, users should begin updating to Drupal 9 as soon as possible.
Bottom Line
You can start preparing your website now since you have less than 6 months before the Drupal 10 release as per the latest update announced by Dries in DrupalCon Portland 2022, especially if it is on Drupal 7 or Drupal 8.
